When you think of list building, are there little $$$ in your eyes? You've heard the old saying, "The money is in the list," no doubt. Or, "You make a dollar a month from every person on your list." Both tell you that your list is money, not people.
But you're forgetting one important thing. You're not list building with walking cash machines, you're list building with people. I have no doubt that you're on several lists. So, how do you like to be treated? Which messages do you read, and why don't you read others?
If you're on one of my lists, you know that I mail out every single day, and if you're on more than one of my lists, you probably get more than that from me. I'm not saying that you shouldn't do that because you should! But there's one difference between how I do it and how most other Internet marketers do it, and you can too. How?
I offer a story.
I rarely send messages that people would consider to be boring. Every one tells a story or gives some tidbit about what's going on in my life. It's usually something very interesting, and even when I do give you links to go and buy something, the surrounding copy isnt' hype and selling, it's human.
If you want your list building efforts to pay off, this is what you have to learn. Tell a story, anything that will get people to read your message, and then, to keep reading it. If you knew how many of your messages went straight into the trash, you wouldn't be very happy. I guarantee it. But if you write a headline like "thump, thump, thump," or "The Day the $3 Million Plug Was Pulled," don't you want to know what those messages are about?
Once they're in, you have to keep them reading. So, tell a story:
in less than 2 hours
something is going to end
forever...
the problem is that I can't
tell you what it is...
but I can say that
1. People who are smart enough
to tap into this unstoppable
traffic stream before 12Noon
Eastern will get it...
2. The only people I will ever
tell about this secret time-limit
are the people who get in on
this profit-pulling system...
3. Hundreds of folks have already
taken the first step, and they
are going to find out later today
what happens at noon...
And there was more to it, of course, but you see what I'm getting at? The story is interesting because writing good copy is all about telling a good story. People clicked on the link just to find the answer. They were entertained. They actually enjoy reading emails like this, instead of the usual hype and drama that most list owners send out to their people.
Will you need talent? Some, no doubt. But you can learn to write better. Take a creative writing course to put you on the right path. Or, just write interesting things about your own life and people will be enthralled. If you don't get people involved, your email will be right in the trash with all the others. You have to get them involved.
List building can be automatic, but maintenance of your list shouldn't be. You need to fertilize a garden to see it grow and you'll have to find ways to make your list building efforts to take root. Communicate with your list members on a human level and watch your profits grow, too.
